Letting Go of What Was: a Meditation

All of life's a stage - A meditation for when you are ready to step into the Director's role of your Life Play

There comes a point on the healing path when we realise we are not our history, that it is merely a story or stage play, and that we no longer need to live our lives based on what was. While letting go does not refer to the memories, or the people, or even the lessons it does mean taking charge to release the grip the past has had on us.

So often, we gather our stories of pain and identity and tuck them into our pockets as evidence of who we must be.
We rehearse old dialogues in our minds.
We cling to shame, guilt, or even pride as if our value is somehow entangled in what has already passed.

But what if we could shift? What if we could loosen its grip and understand that what came before was not wrong but just part of the unfolding?

If your heart is whispering - or perhaps shouting - that it’s time to release what no longer needs to come with you, and if it feels right, join me in a meditation designed to gently guide that release.

Prepare for Meditation

Before you begin, take a little time to prepare. Being aware of this lifetime as the play it is helps make releasing it easier.

All the World’s a Stage

What is the story of your life? Consider life divided into Shakespeare’s 7 stages

  • Act One - infant, early childhood

  • Act Two – school years

  • Act Three – the lover, early adulthood

  • Act Four – middle years, work-life, possibly parenthood

  • Act Five – change, reflection, and possible growth

  • Act Six – the getting of wisdom

  • Act Seven – release and transition

Look to your own life for recurring patterns – do this with support if you need to. What do you think the messages or strengths are?

Now consider these have been experiences and nothing more.

Recall the story of the boat and the wake from Week 9, The Final Step Beyond Anxiety. You are driving this boat called your life in this very moment – how do you want it to be?

Record your vision for yourself with as much detail as you possibly can.

And then join me in meditation as we honor what was and move into what can now be.
