I’ve used a journal for years and here is why.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by our thoughts and emotions, and particularly at this time of year. Here is a strategy that offers a simple yet powerful way to process and manage inner experiences. Did you know that putting pen to paper can release stress, create and invite solutions to drop in? Some baulk at the idea of how to begin and question whether they are ‘getting it right’ - so let’s explore what it means to journal.
No Rules
Journaling doesn’t have rules and it has many benefits.
Whether you love to put words to paper, colour, draw, cut out images, create images, doodle, make it a form of art or simply a space where you can record whatever you wish, however you wish, there is a journal style to suit you.
Benefits of Journaling
Journaling offers numerous benefits for both mental and emotional well-being. Here are some of the key advantages:
Emotional Clarity: Journaling allows you to process your thoughts and feelings, helping you gain clarity on emotions you might not fully understand. Writing them down gives you the space to reflect and release pent-up emotions.
Stress Relief: Putting your thoughts on paper can help reduce stress by providing an outlet for worries and anxieties. It can be a calming practice that encourages mindfulness.
Self-Discovery and Growth: Regular journaling helps you explore your inner world, leading to greater self-awareness and personal growth. It allows you to track your progress, recognise patterns, and understand your evolving needs and desires. Looking back helps us to recognise just how far we have come and creates empathy for ourselves in the times we struggle.
Boosts Creativity: Writing regularly can spark creativity and problem-solving. Journaling helps clear mental clutter, making room for new ideas and inspiration to flow freely.
Improves Mental Health: Research shows that journaling can improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, and provide a healthy coping mechanism for difficult emotions.
Enhances Goal Setting: By writing down your goals, you create a roadmap for achieving them. Journaling helps keep you accountable, motivates you to stay on track, and celebrates your accomplishments.
Increases Mindfulness: Journaling promotes living in the present moment, helping you stay connected to your experiences and enhancing overall mindfulness.
Healing and Release: Writing about painful experiences can help process trauma, release negative emotions, and promote healing. It's a tool for letting go of what no longer serves you.
Important: If this article or practice raises mental health concerns, always see your doctor or mental health provider before continuing.
Have Fun! I often bring a deck of oracle cards to the table and ask my Higher Self, “What message is in my Highest Good today” and draw a card. It always offers a little loving inspiration and guidance.

Whenever I face some kind of a block - writer’s, personal - I tell it to the page. I’ve got a few journals, including one on my iPad, and if I have to revisit all it’ll take me forever. But I know I’ve processed the problem and that helps. Until the next time, of course 😊
I took out my journal after my trip to Tonga last month.
I hadn’t written in it for many months prior. I began writing again after another recent breakthrough and when looking at older entries, I found so many thoughts, questions and lessons I’d been experiencing 6-8 months ago were stepping stones to where I am today. It was so encouraging and enlightening.
