Grounding – Why it Matters
Mother Earth's vibration resonates with humans and all creatures on this planet. Her energy offers us healing, calms our energy, and restores energetic balance. Read on to create focus and flow...
The need for grounding regularly comes up in energy therapy sessions, particularly when a client has been ungrounded for so long it seems normal to them. We don’t need a session to identify if we will benefit from grounding - every human being needs a strong connection to Mother Earth.

We need the tonic of wildness... nature spontaneously keeps us well. Do not resist her!
Henry David Thoreau
Not only can we become frazzled by the hectic pace and unnatural environments in modern life, as our vibration ascends we need to maintain our connection to Earth. Think of the energetic body as two diamonds end to end, with points meeting at the navel. The upper half rotates clockwise and holds our connection to Source/All that Is. The lower half rotates in an anti-clockwise direction and holds our connection to Mother Earth. If we spend too much time in our head or out of our physical body, we risk destabilising the body. Both points need to be equally connected, suspending us between Source and Mother Earth and holding balance between our spiritual and physical selves.
So what does being ungrounded look like?
Take the self-check quiz below and tick each one that applies.
Days when nothing seems to go right and you haven’t even left home yet.
Problems with concentration – whether on conversation, TV, reading/film, or even thinking straight.
Poor sleep, exhaustion.
Experiencing inflammation.
Clumsiness, bumping into things.
Missing appointments, misplacing or losing things.
Feeling out of place, easily upset, in a daze, ‘out of body’.
Suffering aches and pains.
Feeling you are going in circle, or having to redo tasks because you can’t seem to get it right to begin with.
If you recognise 3 or more of the above symptoms it is very likely you need the benefits of grounding - keep reading…
How do we become ungrounded?
We become ungrounded when life experiences, events, emotions or energies impact our energetic vibration and make us feel uncomfortable or worse (this can even be caused by uncomfortable positive experiences). When our bodies become an uncomfortable place to be our natural alignment is disrupted and we become ungrounded.
If you are interested in the scientific aspect of this phenomenon, the US National Institutes of Health published a paper, Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth's Surface Electrons, providing evidence for what we already know. Exposure to nature is good for us and it is good for our health.
Grounding for balance
Remember the last time you walked or played in nature. Recall the joy of soaking in the sights, smells and sounds of the natural landscape? While walking barefoot in nature is the most effective method of recharging ourselves, even being exposed to trees and natural landscape gladdens the heart. Nature is a natural healer. We aren’t meant to live and work indoors away from exposure to Earth’s primordial flow of electrons. This exposure, especially when barefoot, is one of the strongest ways to recharge our batteries but there are a few different ways to achieve being grounded.
10 Tips to becoming grounded
1. Walk barefoot on the earth, sand, or in the water.
2. Sit with bare feet on the ground/lawn/sand.
3. Lie on the ground.
4. Swim in the ocean.
5. Hug a tree. Breathe. Really!
6. Sit. Place grounding stones such as tourmaline or hematite* OR use 4 or 5 seashells/rocks (fresh not purchased) under your bare feet. Relax.
7. Use grounding essential oils - Spruce, Rosewood, Cinnamon, Sage, Clove, Coriander, Lavender, Patchouli, Chamomile, Sandalwood. Put 3 drops of the oil that appeals most to you in an essential oil diffuser and enjoy.
8. Wear a piece of garnet, hematite, kyanite, tourmaline or smokey quartz if you tend to become ungrounded easily or if you have been ungrounded for quite some time. (Remember to cleanse your stone before using – see the earlier Crystal Therapy post.)
9. Enjoy a long soak in a warm bath with 2 cups of sea salt or Epsom salt added to it for approximately 20 minutes. If you don’t have a bath, use a footsoak with 1 cup of Epsom salt - always test for allergies and discontinue if you experience a reaction.
10. Get support from a reputable energy practitioner.
Grounding and Children
Being ungrounded in children looks like chaos and cranky behaviour. Children, especially children with ADHD or on the upper end of the Autism Spectrum, will benefit from grounding. Children too are souls trying to maintain embodiment. They are energetically impacted by playing on synthetic surfaces, sitting in classrooms, being exposed to television/gaming, and the impact of dealing with emotions.
Too cold or too hot outside? Choose the time of day, rug up if needed and do it anyway. Their behaviour will thank you for it.
Grounding is the first step in our healing journey. When we correct this imbalance we prepare ourselves to be ready to deal with whatever it was that caused the imbalance in the first place.
